J & F's Cafe

J & F's Cafe on Urbanspoon

What a lovely little cafe, with kind owners. Very informal dining which suited me nicely, and run by a nice couple. The menu prices were extremely reasonable and food came quickly.

I opted for my all time favourite, Chicken and sweet corn soup ($4.50) which did not disappoint. A generous portion, without lacking the authentic flavours. I also tried out their lunch special ($9.50); a menu from which I tried their Beef with tomato and egg on rice. The special also came with a can of soft drink, which was well appreciated considering the sun decided to show its sleepy face today.

Overall it was a tasty and affordable experience, witch will definitely warrant another visit.

Glen Iris Pantry

Glen Iris Pantry on Urbanspoon

We escaped into Glen Iris Pantry while the rain was bucketing down outside, typical Melbourne weather. Luckily there was an available table, looking across from the open fire. It is a quaint cafe where you can also purchase your milk and bread. A large assortment of fresh filled focaccias, tarts and cakes were available as well as your warm pies and sausage rolls.

I opted to try something new and chose the Chicken and Vegetable Borek ($6.95). Only a tiny bit spicy, this borek was full of lovely flavour and warm. The outside pastry was perfect and all the flavours were balanced well. Spoiling myself and my mother, we shared a New York Baked Cheesecake ($4.50) that looked homemade. The favours were perfect and easily banished any spice from the borek.

Although it was busy the warm drinks came quickly and were priced reasonably, $3.50 each. Personally I thought my Hot Chocolate was superb, and my mother told me the Coffee was 'good value and warm.'

Would definitely return again on a cold day for a chance to sit near the toasty fire.

Short Black Cafe

Went to this restaurant at 1pm on a Friday afternoon and it was absolutely packed. Luckily their were a few seats left for my mother and myself.
Temperature was right and it had a nice ambience, but toilets were very cramped.
Staff came out promptly to give us a menu and take our orders, and didn't mind talking to us for a few minutes.

I ordered a caramel milkshake which tasted delicious and fresh and my mother enjoyed her tomato juice. For lunch I ordered the chicken parmigiana and my mother ordered the antipasto platter. Food came out in less than ten minutes, which I was please about. My parmigiana was tender and also came with chips and a leafy salad. The antipasto platter was very well presented with a large assortment of different items.

Antipasto Platter - $15.5
salt & pepper calamari, semi dried tomato, roast caps, olives, dips, prosciutto & bread

Chicken Parmagiana - $19.9
crumbed breast of chicken w ham, napoli sauce, mozzarella w salad & fries
